Craft
This woven basket is handcrafted from a river reed called Carrizo in Oaxaca, Mexico. Large reeds measuring more than 5 metres in length are harvested from a nearby river. They are split and then trimmed with a large knife. The frame of the basket begins as a star shape. Thinner cut strips of carrizo are then woven in and out of the points of this star. The basket is decorated with darker strips of carrizo. This colour is achieved by waving the reed through flames, however not for long enough for them to catch light. This type of basket weaving pre-dates the Spanish conquest and the baskets have been used by farmers and traders for many centuries.
