Small Barro Negro Pot

This Barro Negro Pot is made by artisans living in the Oaxacan highlands. Oaxaca is renowned for pottery made from black clay which is gathered from the surrounding hills in San Bartolo Coyotepec. Until the 1950s the pottery had a matte grey finish. This changed when a lady named Doña Rosa discovered that polishing the pot with a quartz stone before firing not only closed the pores, but resulted in a black shiny finish. This technique is now used by other families in the village, however our barro negro pottery is made by Doña Rosa’s descendants in their family workshop.
